Our Victoria sales team had the honour of contributing to Nanaimo’s very own Loaves & Fishes Community Food Bank this holiday season. Below Nicole of Loaves & Fishes tells us about their awesome “Food Recovery” program!
“Most of the food we distribute to our clients we receive through our food recovery program. ‘Food Recovery’ is a program that collects all surplus food regardless of quality and redirects it to the highest and best use. This surplus food is primarily fruit, vegetables, meats, and dairy items that grocery retailers have traditionally thrown out in the dumpster. By accepting all food, the ‘Food Recovery Program’ can offer retailers a cost-effective, socially responsible, and environmentally friendly way of disposing of food they are not able to sell.
The Loaves & Fishes Food 4U Food Recovery Program picks up surplus food from Superstore, Thrifty Foods, Country Grocer, Save On Foods, Buy-Low Foods, Sabzi Mandi Supermarket and Pomme Market 7 days a week in Nanaimo.
Once the food is collected, our volunteers sort it according to the high standards of Food Banks Canada to ensure that only the highest quality food is made available to people. This program has enabled us to provide $5.98 worth of good food to those in need for every $1 we raise. All this to say that financial donations are also welcome and help us run this successful program.
