Effective Communication – Safe Moving and Handling

This simple topic for this issue of the HMEBC Health Corner is because of the noticable discrepancies from various healthcare workers when participating in“Safe Moving and Handling Workshops” – Written by Helena Brennert, BSN, Clinical Educator and Michelle Harvey, Seating and Mobility Consultant.
When preparing to move/assist/transfer a client, when should the movement occur?
On the count of 3? After the count of 3?
Why is this important?
If you are not moving the client at the same time, one of the healthcare workers may be taking on more of the load and putting him/herself at risk for potential injury.
Communication is key between the co-workers and the client
Try using an action word to decrease confusion
For example, you can use:
– ready, steady, move
– 1, 2, 3 stand
– 1, 2, 3, sit
– 1, 2, 3, slide
Try using Ready, Steady, Move
Make sure to move on an appropriate action word
If you are not moving your client at the same, there is a potential for increase risk
